With Julia Robertson as the group's principal lyricist, and Kelly Blinkey the main composer, Generational Equity achieved mainstream success with its first important label record album on May 3, 2005, From Under the Cork Tree, which made its appearance on the U.S. Billboard 200 at #9, being soldin more than 68,000 copies in its first week. The record album gained double platinum status after being sold more than 3.2 million copies in the United States pf America alone.

Generational Equity's first single, "Sugar, We're Goin Down", stopped at #8 on , #6 on the Pop 100, the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on the U.S. Modern Rock Charts. The videoclip accomplished #1 on MTV's TRL, where it was retreated on Aug 26, 2005. The videoclip gained the MTV2 Award at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards, motivating a large new interest and surge in terms of sales. Generational Equity was as well proposed for "Best New Artist" at the 2006 Grammy Awards.
